چکیده

The response of a neo-Hookean fiber composite undergoing finite out-of-plane shear deformation is examined. To this end an explicit close form solution for the out-of-plane shear response of a cylindrical composite element is introduced. We find that the overall response of the cylindrical composite element can be characterized by a fictitious homogeneous neo-Hookean material. Accordingly, this macroscopic response is identical to the response of a composite cylinder assemblage. The expression for the effective shear modulus of the composite cylinder assemblage is identical to the corresponding expression in the limit of small deformation elasticity, and hence also to the expression for the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds on the out-of-plane shear modulus. keywords: fiber composites, hyperelastic composites, nonlinear composites, finite elasticity, effective properties, micromechanics

Instabilities of Hyperelastic Fiber Composites: Micromechanical Versus Numerical Analyses

Macroscopic instabilities of fiber reinforced composites undergoing large deformations are studied. Analytical predictions for the onset of instability are determined by application of a new variational estimate for the behavior of hyperelastic composites. The resulting, closed-form expressions, are compared with corresponding predictions of finite element simulations. The simulations are perfo...

Material tailoring and universal relations for axisymmetric deformations of functionally graded rubberlike cylinders and spheres

We find the spatial variation of material parameters for pressurized cylinders and spheres composed of either an incompressible Hookean, neo-Hookean, or Mooney–Rivlin material so that during their axisymmetric deformations either the in-plane shear stress or the hoop stress has a desired spatial variation. It is shown that for a cylinder and a sphere made of an incompressible Hookean material, ...

Homogenized estimates for soft fiber-composites and tissues with two families of fibers

The macroscopic response of hyperelastic fi ber composites is characterized in terms of the behaviors of their constituting phases. To this end, we make use of a unique representation of the deformation gradient in terms of a set of transversely isotropic invariants. Respectively, these invariants correspond to extension along the fi bers, transverse dilatation, out-of-plane shear along the fi ...

Modeling of soft composites under three-dimensional loading

The finite deformation response of fiber-reinforced hyperelastic solids under three-dimensional loading is studied through finite element simulations. The composites are modeled using representative volume elements with random fiber arrangement and periodic boundary conditions. Different matrices and volume fractions are considered. It is found that the shear stiffness of composites with Neo-Ho...

Delamination in sandwich panels due to local water slamming loads

We study delamination in a sandwich panel due to transient finite plane strain elastic deformations caused by local water slamming loads and use the boundary element method to analyze motion of water and the finite element method to determine deformations of the panel. The cohesive zone model is used to study delamination initiation and propagation. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and...
